Some people say that you can never go back in time, but I certainly did! And I’m sure I am not alone. One week ago found me back at my high school, which was left behind fifty years ago after my graduation. I was again surrounded by many of my former classmates with whom I had walked the halls of Bergenfield High School and had shared many days of my youth. It was a trip down memory lane that had me somewhere up in the clouds all week long, recalling moments of such a special reunion weekend!
This journey back in time began on Friday, October 14th, when my high school friend Greta and I checked into the Clinton Inn in Tenafly for a two-night stay. Waiting in the lobby for our room, we encountered a few familiar faces (and some not so familiar anymore!) It was just a preview of what was to come for the next two days. Guessing games, eventual recognition, hugs, laughter, tears, and memories were shared all weekend long. Friday night found many alumni of the BHS Class of ’66 becoming reacquainted at our “Meet and Greet” in the bar and lounge area of the Clinton Inn. Special moments were captured by our roving photographer, Bill, who put his camera to work beginning that night. It was a coming-together that held serious discussions along with smiles and laughter. Thus, the Class of ’66 began their awesome trip down memory lane…
Saturday was a day I will never forget! Many of us found ourselves back at Bergenfield High School to experience a full day of wonderfully planned activities. We could not have been more warmly welcomed! A light breakfast buffet was offered prior to being taken on a guided tour of our high school by some of their current students. We were instantly transported back in time when memories came pouring in! One of my personal highlights was discovering my former homeroom from grades 10-12 which had been in the Metal Shop. Although this room had eventually become a computer lab, the faint letters left on the door told me that I had found what I was looking for! After our tours, we enjoyed a buffet lunch back in the gym before the football game. Many of us purchased special tee-shirts that were printed with our school’s name and former mascot. It was homecoming and a most special afternoon for the Class of ’66. Former cheerleaders (of which I was a part) joined the current squad, cheering everyone as they entered the field. We were recognized as our class marched through the goal posts onto the field before entering the stands. Behind our class came the endless stream of the awesome and talented Bergenfield Marching Band. Former band members were invited to join them if they wished to do so. One of our classmates, Jona, led the Color Guard carrying a flag as they marched through. Finally the “Mighty Mites” took the field as we cheered them on. (I would also like to note that, previously after their morning practice, many shook our hands on their way back to the gym as a way of welcoming us back to BHS.) All the former football players from our class were given seats of honor down on the sidelines. As is the usual custom, the National Anthem was played and sung prior to the game. Vietnam Vets from our class were recognized as they stood beneath the flag of the country they had bravely served. My voice rang out in song with all the others, and I couldn’t have felt prouder at that moment in time! Ours was the last year of being known as the “Mighty Mites”; for the past 50 years they were the “Bergenfield Bears”. But on Saturday, October 15, 2016, the Mites resurfaced and took the field once again. Cheers rang out for the Mighty Mites all afternoon and resulted in one touchdown after another for our home team. They defeated Fort Lee by a landslide! The half-time show was incredible! Bergenfield had always been known for their talented musicians, and they sure gave us proof as they performed that afternoon. Again, I know we all felt so much pride in our school! Some things just never change….except maybe to get even better! My girlfriend and I left the football game in the third quarter, wanting to visit another high school friend who wasn’t able to partake in our reunion because she was recovering in a rehab facility in a neighboring town. When we arrived there, we were pleased to see a couple of other friends from our class who had the similar notion: If Ann couldn’t come to our reunion, the reunion would come to her! Strong and special friendships were prevalent in the class of ‘66!
Back at the Clinton Inn, we all anticipated the special evening planned for us. We each found our name tags, depicting our yearbook pictures, to help others recognize who we were. Walking into the banquet hall, we first encountered a special remembrance table. White candles and pictures of approximately 50 classmates who had gone before us were displayed there. It was a beautiful tribute, as was the passage reading which came a bit later as the official ceremonies began. There were also tables filled with memorabilia of our high school years for all of us to view. After the cocktail hour, we enjoyed the buffet dinner back at our tables…..which were also beautifully decorated. The hard-working reunion committee members were introduced and thanked for all their efforts putting this weekend together. It was a joint venture that was so appreciated by all of us. Then we were provided with the words to a song written and performed by our classmate, Neil, as we all joined in on the chorus! A DJ provided music for most of the evening…..until a special group of band members took the stage area. Most of the former members of “Herald Square” (minus one who couldn’t be there) came together and treated us to some of the songs they had performed back in the day. What a wonderful treat! It was a night of sharing music, dancing, singing, conversations and making even more memories to take back home with us. Sunday morning many of us shared breakfast together in the dining room and then sadly said our goodbyes. No one wanted this special weekend to end….
There are certainly many people to thank for putting this whole weekend together. We owe our gratitude to the Reunion Committee, who worked very hard for a long time on our behalf. Every last detail was covered in such a special way and it all came together perfectly to make our 50th reunion the very best ever! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts….Ellen, Linda, Michael, James and Greg….and all the others who pitched in to help in various ways. Your efforts are so very much appreciated by the entire Class of ’66. And to Bergenfield High School…administration, staff, students, and Board of Education…we can’t thank you enough for the extremely warm welcome you provided for us on Saturday. You definitely brought us all home again….to a place where we all belonged at a most special time in our lives. We take with us now even more wonderful memories of our beloved home town! And to all of our classmates who traveled far and near, representing numerous states from all over the country….thank you for coming together again. What joy we all shared! Couldn’t have done it without you! I sincerely hope we’ll see each other again some day….
